Why and How are Keywords Important

March 7th, 2011

clip_image002

For a business to be effective, it must be noticed by prospective customers. A shop tucked away at the end of a blind lane, never does well. The internet marketing agency website that you put up, after taking so much effort in designing it, goes waste in case customers do not get to see it. For this, it is better to know how search engine advertising on the internet takes place.

You as a local internet marketing business owner would like to sell your product. For that you must inform the general public that you have something to sell. This is done primarily by opening a shop, and putting a banner on your doorstep. The banner advertises to passers-by the name of your shop, the products you stock, your address and contact details. People passing by, may walk in, and may make a purchase, if they find something interesting on the banner. The banner, the decoration of the shop and the way your products are presented in your shop, all make an impression on your customer. Once inside your shop, it is your salesmanship that ultimately clinches the deal. We will now compare what happens on the internet marketing agency website.

Your shop here is your internet marketing agency website. The front page is your banner. It goes without saying that your shop has to be visible to the passers-by. That is done by the search engine placement. This is similar to the advertisements you put up in newspapers, making them bold, so they are more noticeable. On the internet, to make them more noticeable you have to increase their ranking with SEO search engine optimization. This is where keywords play a role. Just as for your shop banner, you would never dream of writing cakes when all you are selling is shoes; so for your website you have to carefully choose keywords related to your business. The search engines look for keywords related to your business. If the search engine finds the relevant keywords, in the proper places on your website, the ranking of your website goes up.

What this does for your internet marketing agency website is, when someone searches for a product similar to yours, the search engine presents your website higher on the list of found sites. Your website now stands a better chance of being looked at by the visitor. Once inside, it is your website design and ingenuity (aka your salesmanship) which will help clinch the deal. If the visitor wanted to tour your shop, and was unable to do so because of untidy clutter, he would definitely not like to come again. Similarly, the navigation within your internet marketing agency website and the ease with which your visitor finds what he is looking for will make him want to come back again.

So where on your internet marketing agency website, should the keywords and key-phrases be placed? Place it preferably, within the title of the page or article. It should also appear in the first paragraph and the last, while appearing several times within the article.

What Common Web-Hosting Mistakes to Avoid

February 26th, 2011

clip_image002

Free website hosting and domain services are available in plenty. You will not be charged a cent for putting up your site with these free service providers. However, if you just stop and think, it will be clear that these are not philanthropic services. They will force you to load your web-site with their choice of banners and advertisements. Revenue from these advertisements is how they earn their keep. Moreover, they will not provide you with sufficient features which you need for your website.

From your side, you should be absolutely clear on your requirements from your web-site domain hosting, and for what purposes you have set up the site. It is best if you can write down your requirements in a list form and keep handy, to add and subtract the features as you move along. This makes it easier to upgrade or change the web-hosting services in the future.

In case you have several websites, and they are generating revenue, it would be a bad idea to have them all under one server, or one service provider. Any disturbance in the service will affect all your web-sites in one go. It may seem simpler for maintenance and billing, to go with one service provider for domain hosting services, but in case of trouble, all your services will get affected at the same time, and you will lose income from all.

Most of us rely on forums, live support and emails for information, help, feedback, complaints, etc. However, consider what happens when your web-hosting service provider is down. You will be able to contact them only through telephone, provided, you have kept a written note of their contact numbers.

Whatever or however many web-sites you own, not keeping backups is an expensive mistake. If you rely on the web-hosting service provider to keep backups for you, it might lead to a situation where the service provider’s resources are down, and he is not in a position to either host your web-site, or to transfer your site to another service provider, or to provide you with a backup. If you have your own backup, you are in a position to approach another free website hosting and domain service provider.

Not checking with your service provider for their policy of updating and upgrading their software may leave your web-site open to security holes. Verify the versions of the software they are currently using and why, before purchasing the web-hosting services from them. Periodically ensure they are upgrading as you become aware of new software releases.

Check the service provider’s own website. If what they have put up is not a good informational site for their own purposes, they will likely not take the effort to give your website domain hosting, a good service either.

You may be tempted to go with a domain hosting reseller. A reseller may be subletting his web-service for a lower fee. But check the background before accepting. He may be good for all, but a novice in the matters of servers and web-hosting. Ask for referrals and references, before you decide.

Getting Started with Free Web Hosting

February 26th, 2011

The very idea to make a website for free with free domain has an exciting ring to it. However, the next moment, doubts creep in. The biggest question is how to do it? Looking into the how part brings another barrier, does this really involve so many different unknowns – Domain, PHP, IP…? However, these are only temporary barriers, which are to be surmounted only the first time. After, there are other bigger barriers to surmount. So, let’s get started. The basic three essentials you need to put your site on the web are Domain, free Hosting and Content.

First and foremost, let us see the purpose of your website, or in other words, what do you need your website for? You may want a web-site for personal purposes like sharing your photos, your writings, your blogs, or your web-cam trials, with your family or friends. Or you may be more commercial minded and would like to set up a niche business domain, or a service for your community. Maybe you just want to spread some religious thoughts in the troubled world. Well, you make up your mind, and to help you decide, it would be best if you jot down the thoughts and make a list. Condense the whole of your list of requirements into one single sentence which best describes what you are demanding your web-site should do.

Once the purpose is finalized, it is time to think of a name for your website. The name should reflect the purpose wholeheartedly, no oblique or obscure references. Run it by your friend or mentor and ask for frank feedback. Compare the feedback with your purpose, and change if need be, until satisfactory results ensue.

Next, it is time to look at good domain names. Service providers for free domain registration and hosting are a plenty. The only problem is they will add their own name with yours. For example, you have decided to call your site www.mysite.com. With a free web domain hosting services provider it may turn into www.myspace.providerofservice.com, and might distort your original purpose. Therefore, it is prudent to pay a small fee for the domain registration and reserve your domain name for the duration of your registration term. In case a .com is not available with your name, try for another extension like .net, .org, .info. You might involve your region with your name, as .uk, .usa, .in, etc. It is preferable the extension reflects your purpose for the website too, and the region part comes after, for example www.myspace.info.usa.

Now that you have your own domain name, you will need to look for a free web domain hosting services provider. What you will need from the service provider is that it allows you to keep your own name without any additions; there are no ad banners added to your site; it provides some web-hosting storage space; it comes with some bandwidth for photos, pictures and video clips; and allows e-mail service. It is advisable to search with Google for “free web hosting companies”, but before selecting, ask around for referrals and references.

Once the free web domain hosting services provider is found, it is time to turn to the last item on the list, web-site content. You may design your own, or take the help of an expert. Then put it up on the net for all to see.

How to sell your Internet Business

February 12th, 2011

clip_image002

There are mainly two reasons why anyone would want to sell his internet marketing firm. One of them could be economic. In these hard times, many a business has floundered, and their owners think in terms of salvaging whatever is left. A second reason is the internet marketing firm is doing quite well, and the owner, after having tasted success, wants to move on to another sphere.

In case you are thinking in terms of selling your internet marketing firm, do a background study first. Check the economic conditions. Is this the right time for such a step as you are contemplating? Are financial options improving for buyers and are banks ready to provide loans? Once you decide to take the plunge, there are a few things which you should take care of, to maximize your profits.

Before buying, any buyer would like to do their research well. Financial records are the first things which any buyer will be interested in. Therefore, your financial books and records should be in good order. This is important to gain the buyer’s trust and to demonstrate to him that the internet marketing firm is worth the price that you are asking for. A record of at least the last three years should be made available, including the tax returns and expense records. All outstanding business issues should have been resolved. All short-term lease agreements, legal issues and any outstanding dues should also have been taken care of.

Any physical elements related to the internet marketing firm should also be looked into and taken care of. Any building, if included, should be painted and repaired, interiors re-decorated and the premises upgraded. The buyer should get a good first impression as this is often the deal starter.

To set a price on your internet marketing firm, some amount of research will have to be done to find out how your business stands vis-a-vis other businesses of similar nature. Overestimation may lead to an extreme difficulty in selling, whereas underestimation may lead to losses. Look at BizBuySell.com and BizQuest.com to see what similar businesses have sold for recently. Check for similarity in factors like type, size and location. Valuation reports of recent sales will provide detailed information.

The value of your internet marketing firm will depend on the present sales, and not on what sales were earlier. If your revenues and cash flows have dropped recently, these have to be factored into the pricing as well. Aim to set a realistic price that will attract the largest number of serious buyers and allow you conclude a deal as fast as possible.

You may choose to hire the services of an established business broker or do the marketing yourself. Do a background check on the broker to establish the references provided and also look for additional references not provided. In case you wish to market on your own, it is best to put together a market plan, and pursue it vigorously. List your internet marketing firm online, in the local newspapers and periodicals, in trade publications, and inform your friends and family.

As an incentive to the buyer, consider providing a certain percentage of the value as seller financing. Do it in the form of a buyer note that the buyer undertakes to pay back periodically, along with interest.

LAMP Server for Web-Hosting

February 12th, 2011

LAMP is the most optimum combination possible for a robust and stable web-server for web-hosting. The LAMP system is made up of the Linux OS, Apache Web-server, MySQL database and PHP. Linux Operating System is the platform on which the rest of the group runs. The web-server software is named Apache. The Database handling software is named MySQL. It is also called the Structured Query Language. For rendering dynamic web-pages, Hypertext Preprocessor or PHP is used. LAMP System makes web hosting affordable.

All components of the LAMP system, are open-source, and provide web-hosting for free. You may use them freely, and you will not be infringing on any copyrights; that is, as long as you are not modifying any source code in the components. Some information on the hardware requirements is in order; basic functionality is achieved with an 800MHz CPU and 128MB RAM, together with a hard disk of 4GB. But in today’s markets, such configurations are no longer available. Therefore, you may use anything above this, but be sure it is rugged, since the server has to be in continuous operation for web hosting services.

Install the Operating System alone as the first step. You can simply insert the live-DVD containing the OS, in the drive, and boot the PC. After the OS has completed loading itself, it will provide you with an option for installing on the hard disk. You should choose to install it. The CD/DVD provides the necessary software in case you want to partition your hard disk, before installing the OS.

Before we can install and set up the other components for web-hosting, the OS has to be set up properly. The basic OS needs some changes to be made, and for this you will need to become the Super-user or login as root. You will have to remain as root until you finish all installations. In case you are performing a keyboard-less server install, or logging in remotely, you can use the Secure Shell. Do not use telnet, since it is not secure. Linux comes in many flavors, so the steps will vary somewhat between distros.

For free web hosting, you can either choose to install the standard version of the other LAMP components that came with the OS you installed. Or, you may uninstall the standard version, and compile and install the latest versions after properly tweaking them for maximum effect. For this, you will have to be careful in downloading the proper source code versions that will match with your current OS. You may also need to install the C++ compiler.

The repository of the distro you are currently using will have the standard versions of the Apache, PHP and MySQL. You may want to download and install, unless it is already done. For installation after compiling, download the proper source code, unpack it as per instructions, and use the ‘configure’ and then the ‘make’ procedures to compile. Install the components sequentially, MySQL first, then Apache and at last PHP.

Harden your installation for security, by following the standard procedures. Check everything repeatedly, before using the server as the cheapest web hosting.
